Freshman Application Essays, Undergraduate Admissions, University Of Illinois At Urbana
Freshman Application Essays, Undergraduate Admissions, University Of Illinois At Urbana Although my parents were not fluent in English, I was able to learn English with the help of Dora the Explorer, Barney, and my surroundings. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. While I physically treat their cancer, I want to lend patients emotional support and mental strength to escape the interruption and continue living. Through my work, I can accept the shovel without burying my grandmotherâs memory. However, a simple walk on a hiking trail behind my house made me open my own eyes to the truth. But the best dimension that language brought to my life is interpersonal connection. When I speak with people in their native language, I find I can connect with them on a more intimate level. However, I was focused not with learning itself, but with good grades and high test scores. I started to believe that academic perfection would be the only way to redeem myself in her eyes--to make up for what I had not done as a granddaughter. When my parents finally revealed to me that my grandmother had been battling liver cancer, I was twelve and I was angry--mostly with myself. Over the years, everything--even honoring my grandmother--had become second to school and grades. Before I could resolve my guilt, I had to broaden my perspective of the world as well as my responsibilities to my fellow humans. I became desperately devoted to my education because I saw knowledge as the key to freeing myself from the chains of ignorance. While learning about cancer in school I promised myself that I would memorize every fact and absorb every detail in textbooks and online medical journals. And as I began to consider my future, I realized that what I learned in school would allow me to silence that which had silenced my grandmother. They had wanted to protect me--only six years old at the time--from the complex and morose concept of death. Hurt that my parents had deceived me and resentful of my own oblivion, I committed myself to preventing such blindness from resurfacing. They covered the precious mahogany coffin with a brown amalgam of rocks, decomposed organisms, and weeds. It was my turn to take the shovel, but I felt too ashamed to dutifully send her off when I had not properly said goodbye. As I pour the masa harina, I cannot help but think about how much it resembles my journey to America. When I moved, I brought my Guatemalan heritage with me into the massive bowl that is the United States. Continuing with the recipe, I gradually add water to the masa harina and knead it until it becomes the desired texture. Assimilating into American culture and the American way of life was no easy feat for me and I struggled at first, but I found ways to manage. I refused to let go of my grandmother, to accept a death I had not seen coming, to believe that an illness could not only interrupt, but steal a beloved life. Sign up to receive emails for events, news, info sessions, and other admission related information. Finally, I extend my hesitant arm to pick up the pack of masa harina and proceed to pour it into the bowl. My world is inherently complex, mysterious, and anti-nihilist. I am David Phan, somebody who spends his weekends debating in a three piece suit, other days immersed within the punk rock culture, and some days writing opinionated blogs about underwear. Cancer, as powerful and invincible as it may seem, is a mere fraction of a personâs life. Itâs easy to forget when oneâs mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. I want to be there as an oncologist to remind them to take a walk once in a while, to remember that thereâs so much more to life than a disease. One day, my mom brought home fresh cabbages and red pepper sauce. She brought out the old silver bowl and poured out the cabbages, smothering them with garlic and salt and pepper. Gingerly, my grandma stood up from the couch in the living room, and as if lured by the smell, sat by the silver bowl and dug her hands into the spiced cabbages. As her bony hands shredded the green lips, a look of determination grew on her face. Though her withered hands no longer displayed the swiftness and precision they once did, her face showed the aged rigor of a professional. For the first time in years, the smell of garlic filled the air and the rattling of the silver bowl resonated throughout the house. The world I come from consists of underwear, nuclear bombs, and punk rockers.

Teen Wrote His College Admission Essay On Burrito Bowls
Teen Wrote His College Admission Essay On Burrito Bowls However, I find this definition lacking, good satire should hold up a fun-house mirror to society to accentuate its problems and perhaps offer hope for the future. Any pessimist can simply expose and discredit vice and folly. Even calling something âvice or âfollyâ discredits it. Having read the novel I have learned to appreciate individualism as a philosophy. The character of Master, a misunderstood writer of his time, reflects in detail the value of being independent of societal views. At first, describe yourself in an essay and be the main hero of your story, actively reflecting on the experiences you describe. The committee will also die to know how you will contribute to the university. Therefore, donât forget to accentuate at this moment as well. I have to analyze great literature and live in its questioning. My experience with Lolita informed my entire way of thinking. It taught me that there is no ending to a conversation, and no meaning without conversation. Martin Amis described this experience best, in his introduction to and essay on Lolita, âClearly, these are not a scholarâs notes, and they move towards no edifice of understanding or completion. And I am running out of clean white space.â This is what I wish to be, I do not want to pretend to that kind of edifice, but rather be met every day by surprise. My grandfatherâs love for art shows the significance of individualismâ"a subject very dear to me. Prior to reading the novel, I viewed individualism as an act of rebellion with little to no effect on the development of personality. My father is a prime example of an individualist, and, for some time, I saw him as an outsider who found many ways to be critical of his environment. Moreover, our relationship has always been strained. Ultimately, think of the activities to put on your personal essay. A common application usually includes extracurricular activities, self-taught language courses, volunteering, your projects, training or hobbies. Think of some meaningful or extraordinary events that turned your life upside down and keep writing them. Stay honest, and if you have a misfortunate story to tell, share it too. With the increasing division caused by social mediaâs ideological bubbles, satire has become a necessary means to provoke thought and conversation outside of oneâs normal exposure. We have put up walls around ourselves and entrenched our ideas, ready for war. Satire is an ideological Trojan Horse, and, when used well, a powerful sneak attack on ignorance. A book will occupy my thoughts and conversation for a period of time but Lolita awakened a violent response- this is what I have to do, for the rest of my life. To make a reader care, an author must place an earnest heart within their satire and at least hint that we can do better. This would place satire in the realm of speculative fiction, the genre that includes science fiction and fantasy. When I was a freshman in high school, The Colbert Report debuted. Attending a religious school in rural Missouri, most of the faculty and students were rather conservative. They werenât stupid; they knew the joke was on them, but it was funny enough that they watched the show and read the books. It certainly wasnât enough to convince them to abandon their political identities, but it did have them absorbing ideas that they wouldnât have entertained for a second if those ideas hadnât been couched in wit. It is that surprise that I can see in the community at St. Johnâs. I imagine life there will be four years of running out of clean white space. But more than anything, I would like to live my life thoughtfully. When I think back, my favorite memories and my moments of greatest esteem are not those when I was victorious, but when I was thoughtful. I treasure the philosophical debates Iâve had with friends, the snow days spent reading in bed, the essays I labored over until they were a source of pride. Merriam-Webster defines satire as âtrenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly.â Catch-22 clearly fits within this definition. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. Iâd become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see âliteratureâ as anything more than mere stories. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didnât expect to find it in AP Lit. When I think about my principles, I think about how I aspire to the humility of Helen Burns and the resolution of Jane Eyre and the stoicism of St. John.
What Colleges Require The Sat Essay?
What Colleges Require The Sat Essay? These will become the first morsels of truth you will include in your essay. Next you will compile a list of your personal life experiences. You need a strategy to get all of that into an essay and still tell a compelling story. You will have to pull out all the stops to make it happen. Here are some practical guidelines you can use to make sure that the essay you create delivers the exact message you want them to receive. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chickenâs unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. Cautiously, it inches closer to the barrier, farther from the unbelievable perfection of the farm, and discovers a wide sea of black gravel. Stained with gray stones and marked with yellow lines, it separates the chicken from the opposite field. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. On a desk in the left corner, a framed picture of an Asian family is beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. The last step is editing and proofreading your finished essay. Try to identify what the tone of your essay is going to be based on your ideas. College essay questions often suggest one or two main ideas or topics of focus. These can vary from personal to trivial, but all seek to challenge you and spark your creativity and insight. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. Now my friends in Switzerland come to me asking me for advice and help, and I feel as if I am a vital member of our community. My close friend Akshay recently started stressing about whether his parents were going to get divorced. With Johnâs advice, I started checking in on Akshay, spending more time with him, and coaching him before and after he talked to his parents. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we donât want to deal with. In a world where we know very little about the nature of âTruth,â itâs very easyâ"and temptingâ"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. Influencers may be your high school drama teacher or a famous actor or actress (make sure you detail why they are your influencer. Wrote my first play in the fifth grade and then directed the production for the entire school. After you complete each list, start elaborating by adding in details. Anything you can think of should be added to the list as long as it meets the three criteria we mentioned earlier. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings.

What Colleges Require Admission Essays? And Which Ones Require Supplemental Essays?
What Colleges Require Admission Essays? And Which Ones Require Supplemental Essays? I am able even to buy and download anything I desire from the Amazon website whenever I want. However, as convenient as technology can be, I still prefer holding a book in my hands. I have always treasured the sensation of paper on my fingers as I flip through the pages of an engrossing story. Discussion, for me, is a natural part of the reading process. Now, instead of tiring our ears, I work away pencils, marking when I find something powerful, noting my thoughts in the margins of the pages. Then, when Iâve finished, I go back and read my own insights. It would be all too easy to let my constant busyness and the distractions of daily life keep me from trying to understand the world and my place in it, but I wonât let that happen. Ever since I took my first philosophy course, when I am seen with a book in my hands it is a philosophical work. In my opinion, Ludwig Wittgenstein beats William Shakespeare any day. Sometimes the difficulty makes reading the book more rewarding. There is nothing more satisfying than finally understanding a passage I couldnât understand before. I loved tracing out the shapes and letters, turning the pages, pretending Icouldread. I slowed downâ"It wasnât like I was racing anyoneâ"and tried to hear every characters voice, hear the nuances of the words, and imagine how it would sound aloud. The book took me a full two weeks to finish, the longest it has ever taken me to finish a book in my life. And this experience opened up a whole new side of reading for me. Being quiet was the unspoken rule of manner and etiquette, where the dominance of the teacher to teach and submission of student to learn by observation was naturally accepted by all members of every class. Not only that, for me, saying aloud my ideas helps me to better understand and clarify my thoughts, and thus myself. This is my favorite quotation from my favorite book, The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela. I read this book for the first time in eighth grade while exploring the causes and consequences of the Mexican revolution. What I considered important was different from what my school considered important as all their interest goes into exams. They talked about what the quickest way to memorize is and what is going to be in the test to memorize. Consequently, my interest and passion in other things only brought me loneliness in learning. However, through my entire high school life, I was not allowed to have a conversation in classes. In elementary school I could always be found with a book in my hand. I read books about pioneers, astronauts, ordinary kids doing extraordinary things. I wasnât quite able to read the original, so I was forced to resort to the âNo fear Shakespeareâ version. The written word isnât meant to be a solitary thing; itâs meant to be shared. For a long time, I bombarded my family with a constant but ever changing stream of chatter on my book of choice. Then, in eighth grade I was introduced to annotations. At first I thought they were tedious and annoying, but given time, I grew to appreciate the exercise. I will forever be aware of myself and others, and I hope to never act on an unconscious bias. I know that Descartes was thinking thateverythingtold to him by his senses might be wrong, but I think his revelation applies more usefully to behaviors and biases we learn from a young age as well. However, my reading material has changed since elementary school. I appreciate nonfiction more than I did as a child. The only thing I didnât like about books was when people would read them out loud . When I finally learned to read, my love of books only increased. When I leave the house I usually use my Kindle for convenience. Technology has a few benefits, like being able to have many books in one place. I can have a large waiting list of my preferred books, all downloaded and ready to read.

Essay Tips These words may not be perfect and will likely need to be heavily edited, but it gets the ideas down and keeps them from getting stuck on one area of their book. It works well for me, but I know others who donât do well with it. I think it depends a lot on your personality, but forcing myself to be consistent day in and day out helps me get my books done. Without a daily word count, I would never complete them. What am I supposed to do if I write 1000 words, but it doesnât make the number of pages I want? Publishers like certain genres to be within certain word counts, so any author who hopes to be published has to create their works within these counts. Many authors use word count as a motivational tool. To help them from getting stuck and editing each sentence over and over again as they write, they choose a minimum number of words they want to write each day. That means people who write long words have an advantage even though long words arenât always good to use. Just because an estimate wonât be exactly right doesnât mean it isnât useful. For those who are looking for a basic rough idea, this is helpful. No matter how great of a writer you are, you are bound to make a few mistakes. I guarantee that you will find more than a few grammar and stylistic mistakes even in this guide. That is why you must check grammar and spelling in your own work. If you have an essay due, do not wait until the last minute to do it; instead, dedicate a few hours everyday to doing a little bit of the work. All you have to do is a little math to figure that out. Do you know what fonts have the widest spacing so that they fill up the page more quickly? I need to find a wide font so I donât have to write as many words to fill up the pages on my assignment. If you can send me in the direction of the best wide font to do this, that would be great. Depending on the genre of book you are writing, word count can be critical in whether or not your writing can actually be published. Discover the schools, companies, and neighborhoods that are right for you. Colleges do want you to have strong beliefs that youâre willing to stand for, and some essay questions give you the opportunity to do just that. I only need to write 250 words and you donât have how many pages that is on your list. If you are given a writing assignment with a page number, the best thing to do is go directly to the person who made the assignment and ask for a word count. This will take away all the variations and help ensure your writing assignment meets expectations. If itâs for something informal and you simply need a general guideline, you can find it below. For those who need a general rule of thumb, a typical page which has 1-inch margins and is typed in 12 point font with standard spacing elements will be approximately 500 words when typed single spaced. I donât think I should have to write more words just because mine happen to be shorter than my classmates. We both wrote the same number of words, his are just longer so it takes up more pages. For assignments that require double spacing, it would take approximately 250 words to fill the page. Again, the type of font used can make the word count higher or lower, but itâs a good rule of thumb for those who are simply looking for a general estimation. The truth is there is no definitive answer to this question. The number of words it will take to fill a page will depend on a number of factors including the type of font used, the font size, spacing elements, the margins used on the paper, the paragraph length, etc. For example, if the assignment says the writing should be in 10-point font, itâs going to take a greater number of words to fill a page than if the assignment requires a 12-point font.

Worries Grow About Application Essay Help That May Go Too Far
Worries Grow About Application Essay 'Help' That May Go Too Far You may want to start by just getting somethingâ"anythingâ"on paper. Think about the questions we asked above and the prompt for the essay, and then write for 15 or 30 minutes without stopping. What do you want your audience to know after reading your essay? This is applicable to any type of essay from argumentative essay to controversial essays. If proper understanding is not had of the requirements, the essay will be worthless. Donât worry about grammar, punctuation, organization, or anything else. For help getting started, see our handout on brainstorming. As long as your message is succinct and to the point, brief, and realistic your essay should have an impact. Each university has its own set of prompts you should write about. Here is an example of a prompt from the University of California. What you think is funny and what an adult working in a college thinks is funny are probably different. We caution against one-liners, limericks and anything offâ"color. Focus on writing in high school.Obviously, you want to do well in all of your classes, but literature courses in particular will be seen as placeholders for your essay-writing skills. When schools donât require an application essay, they will likely look more closely at your grades in classes that are more writing-intensive, to make sure that your writing skills are up to par. Have a parent or counselor read over the essay, too, to catch any errors you might have missed. Spelling and grammar errors can take away from an otherwise stellar essay â" so be mindful. When developing a topic that reveals something new, find a way to frame the story or idea that shows a slice of your life or the event. Be descriptive and give details that appeal to the senses â" taste, touch, smell, etc. When writing about a meaningful experience or event, you donât have to give a long timeline of events. Get several people to read it and write their comments down. It is worthwhile to seek out someone in the field, perhaps a professor who has read such essays before. They also are looking to see how well you interact with other students, your willingness to see others succeed. Your essay should show evidence of how you interact with others. Evidence that youâre not just out there to help yourself but that you are willing to extend assistance to other students who may need it. It should reflect your social skills showing that you are an interesting individual that others will want to share their college years with. Every year, more than 3 million essays will land on the Admissions desk in universities across the country. Can you imagine how many papers professors read? Admission Essay
Admission Essay The admissions officers already know soccer is an interest, so choose a deeper topic that reveals something meaningful. Aside from grades, standardized test scores, and your high school courses, one of the most important elements of the college application is the essay. While the Common Application and the Universal Application each have a required essay, many colleges include their own school-specific essays, known as writing supplements. It is always worth an applicantâs while to write as strong an essay as possible, but its role in the process is a variable one. Your studentsâ college essay is their opportunity to reveal their best qualities and to show an admission committee what makes them stand out from other applicants. Work with your students to help them with this important piece of their application. Whether youâre prepared or not, there comes a time when every student is faced with writing their first college essay. While essays donât weigh as much as grades or course selection, if you are applying test-optional or to a smaller school, more attention will be given to this section of the application. At almost all selective colleges however, every college essay will be read by multiple people. If a student is on the fence, not an early admit or deny, essays will probably be read multiple times by multiple people while an applicant is being discussed. You can be certain that you did not spend all that time crafting the perfect essay in vain. How much weight a college puts on that portion of the application may differ. While you research your application essay, you will be encouraged to check out some examples of great essays and get inspired. While this is a great exercise, many students allow themselves to be influenced too much by the examples, and use lots of clichés in their desire to impress the admission officers. The admissions officers will only spend a brief amount of time reviewing your essay, so you need to start with a vivid paragraph that will keep them engaged. The introduction has to reveal to the reader what your essay is about and catch their attention. A college application essay is usually around 500 words, and those words can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection. You will spend many days researching and crafting your essay, but admissions officers will only have a few minutes to actually read it, so you need to get their attention. Youâve completed all the application forms, taken all the tests, and now itâs finally time to impress your universityâs admission officers with a great college application essay. Essays That Worked
Essays That Worked I'm an 18-year-old aspiring writer/poet in Upper Sixth in England. My interests range from sports to fashion but most of all literature. I have occasionally bright hair and an obnoxiously cheery personality. Finish by making a decision, tell the reader what the answer is. Start with something other than the cliche 'to conclude' or âultimately.â Teachers are tired of hearing those words, and often, they can be left out. Go with âultimatelyâ however if you feel like your conclusion is incomplete without this transitional phrase. If you can, save a nice interesting fact to hit the reader with in the conclusion. For direct speech, one for every time you change speaker . Itâs a lot less cumbersome to skip a mention of the speaker than to add âsaid Maryâ and âJohn saidâ after every direct quote. So theoretically, you can have a paragraph consisting of one word plus punctuation marks. This is your chance to essentially say 'so basically I was right and the previous paragraphs are the proof of it'. Once your topic sentence is written, it's time to turn your notes into sentences to supporting the claim made in your topic sentence. The majority of your body paragraph should be backing up your paragraphâs point with evidence, facts and quotes. At the end of your paragraph, relate back to the question (don't forget your key-words) and make a judgment about this individual point in reference to your thesis. So make sure you know the content and collect your notes -- do whatever you need to prepare. This includes collecting your stationery and paper etc, so that before you know everything you want to write about. and constantly refer to it and use the keywords to show the reader/examiner/your teacher that you are addressing the question. Youâve already determined what your three major points are and which notes/facts should support which points. Facts youâve researched that donât quite fit with your argument should be kept in another section -- that will be for your counter-argument. Trust me -- you will get brownie points for addressing these points later in your essay. Having a clear idea of the question is SO important to remain organized as you do your research. Okay -- thatâs a bit of an extreme example, but the reasoning holds true. 1,000 words in direct speech would therefore mean youâd write way more than the five or ten paragraphs our initial guideline suggested. These include Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, and Verdana. Many teachers will specify this, too, so be sure to check! This is one reason why a teacher may give an assignment length in words instead of pages - page length can be faked by changing the margins and fonts. If you're asked to submit a paper with single spacing, you will be writing two-and-a-half pages. If you're using 1.5 spacing, it would be around three pages. For more on story length and novel word count, see you on Career Authorsâ Facebook page. Worse, all three of these answers reveal a lack of understanding of the marketplace in which writers are trying to sell storiesâ"the same marketplace where we agents are selling stories. Along with these standard formats, you're likely to be assigned a standard font size, too. Get ready to see 12pt written somewhere in your teacher's instructions. Different fonts and different font sizes will affect the number of pages you write. Before you start writing like a determined maniac, you need to also have an outline first -- otherwise, you could end up scrapping most or all of what you wrote in the first place. So go back to your screen, accept that the first draft is going to be DARN AWFUL, and challenge yourself to write that first sentence -- then another -- and another. The tendency toward perfectionism is the enemy of all progress.

Tips For Writing An Effective Admission Essay
Tips For Writing An Effective Admission Essay Vibrate settings may be permitted if the instructor does not believe it will distract him or her, since the noise of the vibration may not be noticeable in a large classroom. If a student needs to answer the phone during an emergency, he or she can step out of the classroom to do so. This setup would give the students and the instructor peace of mind. Arguments against cell phone control typically focus on safety concerns. Put your thesis in one of the first three sentences of the introduction if you are writing a 3-4 paragraph essay, and in the first sentence if you are writing a 1-2 paragraph essay. Read through your writing and make sure that every sentence has a specific and unique contribution to the essay. If two sentences convey two only slightly differing ideas, try to find a way to combine them. Use semi-colons, em dashes, or compound sentences if necessary. For example, do you have any sentences that start with, âIt isâ or âIt seems thatâ? You can use the first day to write a draft and do some minor editing. Then on the second day, you can look at the essay with fresh eyes to do your final edits. Cell phone restrictions in classrooms should also include specific disciplinary actions for breaking the rules. If a student is caught using the phone in class, he or she should be excused for the rest of the day. Do not cite three or four pieces of supporting evidence in an elaborate thesis if you are only allowed 500 words. If you only have a few paragraphs to write your essay, you will likely only have room for one main point of supporting evidence. Keep your thesis short and limit your supporting points, since you always need to set aside plenty of room in your essay for introspection. Use our free and easy online tool for counting characters, words, sentences, paragraphs and pages in real time, along with keyword density and reading level. Always think about your audience when writing a scholarship essay. You can usually use the essay writing prompt or question to form this sentence. Be ready to cut unnecessary segments out in order for your essay to meet the word count. It is not your stories that get you into college, but how they have affected your character and your thinking. You should strive to portray yourself in the best possible light and keep your essay focused on answering the prompt. It is also important to be aware of the complexity of your topic. Pick topics for which you have enough room to elaborate. What organization is issuing the scholarship, and how can you tie that into your writing? What is the underlying information they want to learn from your essay? Write in a way that shows you are the best candidate for the scholarship. Get all your thoughts on paper, and you can extend or shorten the essay during the editing process. Give yourself at least two full days to write the essay. This is often the most difficult paragraph to write. In your conclusion, you should restate the thesis and connect it with the body of the essay in a sentence that explains how each point supports the thesis. Your final sentence should uphold your main idea in a clear and compelling manner. Be sure you do not present any new information in the conclusion. Describe your main idea, or what the essay is about, in one sentence. These are extraneous words that can be taken out without altering the sentenceâs meaning. If your essay is significantly longer than the suggested word count, read through it and highlight everything that is most importantâ"this includes important points of introspection and supporting evidence. If you choose to use this approach, remember that it might become necessary to remove information that you had initially deemed important. Here are some tips on how you might cut down your essay. Professors should refrain from physically taking possession of a studentâs phone because of liability conflicts. If the phone is damaged while in the professorâs possession, the school or the instructor could be held responsible for the repairs. It is safer to ask the student to leave the classroom than it is to take the phone away completely. The best solution is to create cell phone usage rules that allow devices to be accessible without disturbing other studentsâ educational opportunities. Students should be permitted to keep their phones in their bags, pockets, or other belongings as long as the phones are on silent in class.

Summary Of Rent Seeking And The Making Of An Unequal...
Ninety- Nine Percent Supporting and Rooting for the One Percent In todayââ¬â¢s society, the rich get richer and the poorer get poorer. Why is it that our ââ¬Å"land of opportunityâ⬠society is so filled with so much inequality? The poor are often the ones with losses. According to Joseph E. Stiglitz, the author of ââ¬Å" Rent Seeking And The Making Of An Unequal Societyâ⬠, individuals of society are made to believe that: ââ¬Å"The poor, in this land of opportunity, have only themselves to blame.â⬠Millions of individuals in our society are losing jobs daily, but the one percent of the top class is not losing their jobs. As a result of this inequality, an egocentric and a society filled with inequality has formed. In Robert Thurmanââ¬â¢s essay, ââ¬Å"Wisdomâ⬠, Thurman claims that a society filled with inequality is formed as a result of giving importance to the self. However this claim can be falsified by comparing it to the text by Martha Stout, ââ¬Å "When I Woke up Tuesday Morning, It Was Fridayâ⬠. In Martha Stout ââ¬Ës text her patient, Julia is extremely successful. Along with her successes Julia does not give much importance to her self. Julia often disassociates from reality is unsure of her self, so she cannot give much importance to her self. Considering this it is accurate to hypothesize that our society filled with inequality is not resulting from individuals giving importance to the self. However , it can be justified to blame the top one percent for the inequality in our nation. The selfish behavior

Hand Sanitizer Fire Project - Instructions
Here is an easy fire project that produces flames cool enough for you to hold. The secret ingredient? Hand sanitizer! Hand Sanitizer Fire Materials Be sure your hand sanitizer lists ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol as the active ingredient. Other chemicals may not work or may burn too hot. What you need: Hand sanitizer gelLighter or match Instructions On a fire-proof surface, make a pattern using the gel.Ignite the edge of the gel. The flame will spread. If you like, you can touch the flame. Be careful! Although the hand sanitizer flame is relatively cool, its still fire and it can burn you. Colored Fire You can mix colorants into the hand sanitizer gel to produce a colored flame. Boric acid or borax (found in cleaners and pest control products) will produce a green flame. Potassium chloride (lite salt) will give you a purple flame. You can create cool special effects by applying the burning gel to other surfaces. For example, coating a metal object will form a halo of flame around it, which makes a great effect for photos. If you choose to coat a flammable object (e.g. a stuffed animal or a cardboard shape), soak it in water first. While this wont completely protect flammable matter from damage, it will keep it from bursting into flame. Watch the video of this project. How to Put the Fire Out Because hand sanitizer is a mixture of water and alcohol, once some of the alcohol burns, the water puts the fire out on its own. How quickly this happens depends on the specific product youre using but its usually around 10 seconds. If you want to put out the flames before that, you can simply blow them out, as you would a candle. Its also safe to douse the flame with water or suffocate it by covering it with the lid of a pot. About Hand Sanitizer Fire Hand sanitizer has applications beyond killing germs. Gels that contain ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol produce a relatively cool flame that is made more manageable by the high percentage of water in the product. You can use the gel to draw with fire or for projects in which you need to hold fire. Keep in mind, the flame is still hot enough to burn you if you hold it too long and it can also ignite paper, fabrics, etc. Take care to perform this project in a safe location, away from flammable material. As with any fire project, its a good idea to have a fire extinguisher or at least a glass of water handy. Hand sanitizer fire is an adult-only project. Fun Fire Projects If you liked making fire using hand sanitizer, try these related flame science experiments. How to Breathe Fire, Safely: Using a nonflammable, edible chemical to breathe fire.Handheld Fireballs: Water is the key ingredient to creating a flame cool enough to hold.Make Green Fire: You can use the same chemical to color hand sanitizer flames.More Fire Projects: Were just getting started!

Substance Abuse in Vermont - 1784 Words
According to an article on wcax.com, ââ¬Å"more Vermonters died from opiate overdoses last year [2011] than murders and traffic fatalities combined.â⬠Some opiates have medically valid uses, while others are recreational drugs of abuse. All are physically addictive, and it has become evident that many people have begun to abuse them. Pharmaceutical drugs have taken over the minds of many Vermonters. I do believe that Vermont is facing a severe epidemic when it comes to opiate addiction. According to Governor Peter Shumlin, ââ¬Å"We re spending roughly $134 million of taxpayer dollars a year to incarcerate drug- and alcohol-addicted people.â⬠The amount of money spent on addicted people is astonishing. As such, itââ¬â¢s more prone to abuse. Today, Suboxone is one of the most common street drugs in Vermont, and is regularly used and abused in the stateââ¬â¢s correctional system. â⬠¦An 8-milligram dose, which costs $8 at a pharmacy and $10 to $15 on the street, sells for about $100 behind bars. In fact, a 2005 case study on Vermont by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that ââ¬Å"buprenorphine is widely available in the stateââ¬â¢s correctional facilities,â⬠though itââ¬â¢s unclear whether inmates use the drug more to get high or get clean.â⬠I do understand that suboxone can be a great tool for treating drug addiction, but it can also be great for that guy on the street looking to get high. Furthermore, why would this drug be available to the members of the prison system if there was any potential of abuse? People who are incarcerated will withdraw. There is no need to allow them to replace their addiction with suboxone. Are inmates provided with methadone while in prisonââ¬âNo. The reason for this is because methadone is a highly controlled substance. What is wrong with Vermont?
